Explore the west coast on foot

Local Walks

With miles upon miles of coastal scenery, the best way to discover Oban is by foot!

Known as the ‘gateway to the isles’, Oban has so many sights worth seeing in and around the town, as well as on the nearby islands. We’ve listed some of our favourite walks that will allow you to discover some of the best views on the west coast.

Pulpit Hill

Just a short walk away from our George Street hotel is Oban’s Pulpit Hill.

From the south end of the harbour, follow the signposted path uphill. This walk takes you through a hilly residential area before reaching the summit.

When you reach the top, you will be spoilt by panoramic views of the west coast. Look down into Oban’s charming town centre and harbour-front esplanade with our very own coliseum, McCaig’s Tower, dominating Oban’s skyline above. Look out to sea and find our many neighbouring islands, that are just a ferry-trip away. Spot the isles of Kerrera, Lismore, Mull and more!

Cnoc Carnoch

For a longer walk with a leisurely climb, the walk to Cnoc Carnoch, locally known as Battleship Hill, is a popular walking route that rewards you with amazing views.

First head towards the north of the harbour and beyond to the Dunollie Castle grounds. Follow the track through the grounds and head uphill before you reach the castle. There is a short distance of steep terrain before you reach the summit, however this is made all worthwhile when you are greeted by panoramic views at the top. Look out to the Sound of Mull and back across to Lismore, and of course our lovely town of Oban.

Ganavan Sands

For those looking for a gentle stroll along the coast, the Ganavan Sands route is the walk for you.

Two miles north of Oban, only a 10 minute drive or 50 minute walk from our hotel, is a stretch of sandy beach that offers you amazing views out to Morven, Lismore and Mull. Located parallel to the sand, is a popular coastal walk, home to many birds and wildlife. This is a stunning beach to visit in the warmer months, but it’s also worth the visit in winter - just remember to wrap up warm!

The Isles

Just a stone's throw, or ferry-trip, away from Oban lies many islands of Hebridean paradise.

The islands of Lismore and Kerrera are great places to go for a day-trip on foot. Reach Lismore after an hour on the ferry from Oban and be welcomed by this beautiful green island filled with rugged landscapes and sheltered bays.

Hop on the ferry to Kerrera from the Gallanach ferry port south of the town centre. Once you reach the island, you can complete the 10km circuit that begins and ends at the main ferry port. As you wander these isles you will discover many historic ruins, like the magnificent Gylen Castle, and be rewarded with views out to Ardnamurchan, Colonsay and beyond.
