Island Hopping Day Trips From Oban

Known as the ‘gateway to the isles’, the port town of Oban is a great base for any island hopping adventure.

Regardless of the time of year, watch the ferries come and go at all hours of the day. The ferries and boats that arrive and leave the bay, travel to and from the endless islands of the Inner and Outer Hebrides. However, you don’t always need to travel afar as Oban is a great place to stay to visit the nearby neighbouring islands. We’ve listed some of the best places to visit on a day trip from Oban!

Isle of Kerrera

Kerrera is Oban’s closest neighbour, and can be seen from most parts of the seaside town. Just a few minutes away on the ferry, Kerrera is a paradise for keen walkers and cyclists with its magnificent scenery and quiet coastal roads. Just 7 kilometres long and 2 kilometres wide, you can explore the beautiful landscape and discover the historic ruins of Gylen Castle in just a couple of hours. Finish your trip with a visit to the island’s tearoom for some well deserved refreshments.

Lismore

The Isle of Lismore is a small island only 10 miles long which can easily be explored on foot or by bike. Just a short ferry journey away, this island is a great place to spot wildlife, such as seals, otters and peregrines, as well as discovering its fascinating history and appreciating its beautiful views. The island’s Gaelic Heritage Centre is a great place to visit to learn about the island’s Gaelic roots, and how the residents incorporate this rich historic culture into their strong, yet modern, community spirit.

Isle of Mull

The ferry from Oban to Mull, takes around 40 minutes, however, this is well worth the trip as there is so much to see and do on this vibrant island. Climb to the summit of the island’s only munro, Ben More, discover the rich history within Duart Castle or spend your day on the sparkling sands of the island’s stunning beaches, including Calgary Bay. Mull is also famous for its colourful shorefront town of Tobermory. Whether you want to explore Mull’s spectacular natural landscape, or wander around the charming shops and cafes of Tobermory, a trip to Mull is definitely a day-trip worth taking!
